When the Chips are down...

A German shepherd husky cross dog, named Chips and his platoon came under fire as they landed on a beach during the US-led invasion of Sicily in July 1943, aptly called Operation Husky. The loyal escaped from his lead and ran towards the enemy machine gun Chips entered the shack and the firing stopped. An enemy soldier then appeared with Chips at his throat, enabling the platoon to push on.

Chips was also a sentry at the Casablanca Conference in January 1943, where Churchill and Roosevelt met.

The was returned to his family in New York in 1945. He died the next year.

(US military working Ayron received the posthumous medal on Chips' behalf)

The Dickin Medal is the 'animal Victoria Cross' the 70th presented, was made yesterday at the Churchill War Rooms in London.

John Wren, 76, whose father donated Chips to the war effort, said the Dickin Medal, “means a lot” to his family.

Not certain if it is coyotes, coons, or deer out there driving her nutz but she's back at it again defending her honor and her turf.

Great post, Bret; brought a tear to my eye. It's an amazing +38F here tonight with a SW Chinook wind at 25 mph. Some of the snow has begun to melt. More snow is forecast for the late weekend.

It is 74 here in the office but I can't get warm... The highest I seen it outside was like 1F or -17C.. we are to have a warm up to a more "normal' winter temps here for a week anyways and blow off this arctic crap. It was way warmer in Alaska than here today.

Source of the chinook where I live by the way sunny up 8c. Nice ocean currents also help keep Alaska from freezing totally up.This currant also comes from southwest brought forth to here from Hawaii(which id rather be right now).

It would be nice if it's influence were felt further inland.
