Karol Józef Wojtyła, the Archbishop of Kraków, won the papal elections on October 16, 1978. The first Non-Italian to Win the Papacy since 1523

The papal conclaves were held after his predecessor Pope John Paul I died after only 33 days in office.

As Pope, Wojtyła took on the name of John Paul II. He was the second-longest serving pope in modern history, after Pope Pius IX, who was in office for over 31 years.

Posthumously, he has been referred to by some Catholics as "John Paul the Great", although the title has no official recognition.

It is traditional to celebrate saints' feast days on the anniversary of their deaths, but that of John Paul II (22 October) is celebrated on the anniversary of his papal inauguration.

I am a Lutheran too, but I still find the Papacy amazing in its ability to shape popular opinion and influence world politics.

The Pope wields one hell of an effect upon the rest of the world whether or not they are Catholic. John Paul was instrumental in the downfall of the Communist block.
